The popular and successful MPG Marathon, the two-day 400 mile economy event run under the auspices of the RAC Motor Sports Association, which challenges drivers of 30 cars and 10 vans to record the lowest possible fuel consumption or the best percentage improvement on manufacturers’ combined cycle figures, has received support – for the safer driving award - from the road safety charity RoadSafe. “The way a driver controls his vehicle,” said RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh, “is a good indication of his or her attitude towards safety. Regular harsh braking for example usually indicates a lack of awareness, and driving at excess speed is dangerous. TomTom WORK delivers to top managers that essential knowledge about which drivers are at most risk”. As part of the Marathon, and for the second year running, TomTom WORK, who is one of the event’s principle sponsors, will be promoting a Safer Driving Award to recognise both efficient and safe driving. Each of the van entries will be equipped with TomTom WORK’s LINK 300 telematics system which blend satellite navigation with vehicle tracking and allows the event organisers to monitor driver inputs to the brakes and steering, as well as monitoring speeding. These “driving events” such as harsh braking and steering are recorded and graded using a star rating system according to the severity of the offence, and reports are then generated for the organisers to determine the winner of the award.
