VAUXHALL Vectra - Fast Fan

Q
I have a 2005 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 estate. When turning the fan on, for example to demist the windscreen, there is no response on settings 1, 2 and 3, but there is full power on setting 4. Also there is a click when moving the fan from the off position to setting 1, and similarly a click in reverse (setting 1 back to off) which would indicate that there is power to the switch. Can you suggest anything I might try to rectify the problem?

A
The heater motor itself must be in good order as it operates on high speed. It seems that the motor resistor connections are faulty, or the heater switch connections (including earth) have become disconnected. Withdraw the heater switch and check all connections. Do the same at the heater motor end (accessible via the engine compartment). If you have access to a continuity meter, such as an ohmmeter or a test lamp, check each cable colourto- colour for continuity between the heater switch and the heater motor, plus the speed limiting resistors. The most likely possibilities here are:
1. Poor connections between heater switch and heater motor/resistor unit
2. Faulty resistors, 3. Bad earth at motor or switch
4. Faulty heater switch
All this assumes you have a standard heating arrangement and not a climate control system, where the fan speeds are controlled electronically.
