Double The Misery On UK Roads This Monday As Kids Go Back To School

Monday (6 September) is set to be one of the busiest days on the roads, as Brits return from their holidays and kids are back at school.  Last year on the equivalent 'back to school' Monday there were 702 more miles of traffic and 297 more traffic incidents compared to a typical Monday morning in August, which had only 385 miles of congestion and 281 incidents.

Using historical traffic information gathered by TomTom HD Traffic it's clear there will be many more drivers on the road during the morning rush hour increasing traffic jams and incidents.

The TomTom HD Traffic centre reported:

  • Typically there were 1087 miles of delays on all roads between 6am and 9am on last year's 'back to school' Monday (7 September 2009).   This compares with just 385 miles of hold ups across the country on a typical Monday morning in August (24 August 2009).
  • Between 9am and 1pm on the same Monday in 2009, there were 869 miles of delays as against 385 miles two weeks earlier.
  • At 8.30am on Monday 7 September last year there were a total of 578 separate traffic incidents causing rush hour delays, compared with only 281 incidents in mid-August.
