CITROEN Saxo - Saxo Bush Fire

Q
I'm trying to change the bushes on my Saxo's lower arms, but can't push the old ones out. I've tried pushing them out using a vice with lots of sockets and spacers on both sides of the bush, but it just won't move. I've not got a hydraulic press, so is there another way to get the old bush out?

A
A hydraulic press is the best solution, but another approach is to burn or cut out the rubber part of the bush, then carefully cut the sleeve of the old bush and chisel it out. Burning out the rubber of the old bush can be dangerous. The burnt rubber gives off toxic fumes and you'll need an oxyacetylene blow torch to do this. The easiest DIY approach is to cut out the old rubber. Start by drilling a few holes through it, then use a suitable size of hole cutter to remove the remains.
When cutting the sleeve of the old bush, use a hacksaw and make sure you don't cut into the bush housing itself. Similarly, when chiselling out the remains of the sleeve, avoid damaging the walls of the bush housing.
